Deputy Director - Efficiency & Effectiveness (HIV)
Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In developing countries, it focuses on improving people’s health and giving them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. In the United States, it seeks to ensure that all people—especially those with the fewest resources—have access to the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life. Based in Seattle, the foundation is led by CEO Jeff Raikes and co-chair William H. Gates Sr., under the direction of Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett.
The mission of the Gates Foundation’s Global Health Program (GHP) is to help ensure that lifesaving advances in health are created and shared with those who need them most. To date, we have committed nearly $10 billion in global health grants to organizations worldwide. HIV/AIDS is one of the Gates Foundation’s top global health priorities. We focus on reducing the burden of HIV in developing countries, where the epidemic represents one of the most serious health and development challenges.
The foundation’s HIV Strategic Program Team (SPT) is launching a new initiative “Efficiency & Effectiveness” (E2), with the aim of increasing impact per dollar spent on HIV programs. The E2 initiative will be led by the Deputy Director, who will develop an integrated strategy for how the foundation will engage and invest across the five sub-initiatives to generate significant gains in the efficiency and effectiveness of HIV spending. The Deputy Director will manage a small team of Program Officers who develop and actively manage grants that execute against the approved strategy. As a core member of the HIV SPT management team they are expected to play a major role in external partner/stakeholder management as well as overall HIV strategy and portfolio management.
Must have at least 15 years of professional experience with an emphasis on public health/HIV, a minimum of 5 years of experience leading a cross-functional team, and an advanced degree in economics, epidemiology, statistics, operations research, engineering, mathematics, physics, management, or a health professional with extensive training in quantitative analysis.
